Jen Thompson, an attorney in Maine for over two decades, has deep experience working for and with Maine municipalities. She has dedicated her career to the practice of municipal law and to serving as attorney and advisor to Maine’s municipalities and local public officials, with a passion and commitment to local government and municipal home rule authority.
Before opening Praxis, Jen worked in the public sector for years as both Associate Corporation Counsel and Acting Corporation Counsel for the City of Portland. There she advised city staff, the city council, the city’s planning board, and other boards and committees on all manner of legal and policy issues. Most recently, Jen worked as a staff attorney at the Maine Municipal Association where she had the opportunity to advise municipal boards and local leaders from communities of all sizes throughout the state. She has taught Land Use Law at the University of Maine School of Law as an adjunct professor and conducted multiple presentations and trainings sponsored by the Maine Municipal Association, Maine DOT, the Maine Harbor Masters Association, and other esteemed organizations.
As a result of her years spent in the public sector, Jen has extensive experience working closely with municipal boards and officials at all levels in communities throughout the state on the full range of issues that arise in municipal government, including: land use and development, code enforcement, contract negotiation and drafting, internal policy/ordinance development and drafting, the legislative process, board procedure, public records requests, and employment and personnel matters.
